I live in Huntsville and have been running the trails at Huntsville State Park for about 17 years. Several years ago, I was running alone on the west perimeter trail and a mountain lion crossed the trail up ahead of me. Never saw it again but have encountered wild pigs many times. Luckily, I never got between a momma and her babies.Streakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09213045376769934630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299086143790529567.post-37104256043824316722011-02-05T20:45:01.459-08:002011-02-05T20:45:01.459-08:00Hi Tammy, I was looking at the Wasatch 2011 entran...Hi Tammy, I was looking at the Wasatch 2011 entrants list to see whether my friend made it,(he didn't and I was going to be his pacer so I was disappointed) and I saw your name on the provisional Grand Slam list. But now you all will need to catch me to do this!

Trevor,

I remember you!

You were so sweet at the finish and I was honored to have my picture taken with you.

I highly recommend racing in a shirt with your name on it because every time I spectate at any race I love to be able to call out runners names (and even in races that print your name on the bib it is too small for me to read!)

I was so happy to wave back, give high 5's and thank the volunteers. We (the runners) are so luck to be able to do something that is so much fun!

Will you be doing RNR Arizona next year? I definitely will be back (but maybe next year I will go back to my rightful place of 5+ hours where I can eat, drink, hula hoop and perhaps even meet the critters along the course--last year there was a live PARROT that a gentleman would let runners hold!!!)

It was a pleasure to meet you and I wish you the best of luck in all your future races. I was right behind you ... lots of people calling your name - as you had it written on your shirt - with you waving in return. Although I usually couldn't see your face during these times, I get the distinct feeling you smiled every time you waved. After following you for so long, and hearing your name so many times, I found myself lined up for the post-race photo across from you. I decided to take your picture, since you were such a constant for me through that last part of the race. Perhaps you remember me asking you if I could take that that photo?

Anyway... after getting home, viewing my finishing video, I also saw yours (my gun time was 17 seconds behind yours) ... plugged your name in the internet, and voilà - found your blog. Trust me, I'm not a stalker! I just thought it was cool that I "found" you after returning home.

Big congratulations on your BQ!Trevorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18042996265425885675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299086143790529567.post-75080941497100119252011-01-26T09:09:49.348-08:002011-01-26T09:09:49.348-08:00Tammy! I was running down Kaaterskill high peak on the long path WAY too fast and out of control and i saw 2 bear cubs and their
mother. Bear cubs were on the right of the trail and mother was on the left. It was too steep and the trail was dusty and i could not stop. I just kept on going hoping i would not kill myself falling or hitting a tree or getting grabbed by mommy. I think i ran over a mile out of control downhill before i let up. It was one of my scarier trail moments. Nowadays the trail that seems to exact the most pain for me is a gentle bike path with stream crossings on concrete pilons. I have hurt myself
twice on those pilons - once last week
where i ended up bloodied and in the creek.catskillmarinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00729944111014940365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299086143790529567.post-4225326891027261532010-12-24T07:42:12.542-08:002010-12-24T07:42:12.542-08:00Oh Tammy. I have some of the same trail running co...Hi Tammy!
I have some of the same trail running concerns as you do.

Baby and Mother (Bear, Wolf, etc)
Not very likely to occur since mammals usually avoid people. On the other hand, mother bears are notoriously paranoid about protecting their young and documented cases are almost always posthumous. In any event, probably a DNF.

Falling
As I grow older injuries take longer to heal, many injuries never completely heal, no injury ever made anyone faster, and they add up. Falling can lead to a DNF.

Water In My Shoes
I hate water in my shoes. I'll pick my way through a stream crossing or mud bog. This can cost a lot of time and lead to a DNF.

Unreasonable Race Officials
There will be that one person strictly adhering to the cutoff times. Missing a cutoff can lead to a DNF.

Some of your worries that I don't worry about:

Serial killers
IMHO serial killers are usually neither nature lovers nor distance runners; I figure I'm unlikely to meet one either walking through the woods or running in a race. Murder is not a leading cause of DNFs.

Rattlesnakes
Snakes are going to "hear" runners coming via ground vibrations and move to get away. Staying on the trail is the best plan here. I don't wear headphones so I hope I would hear a rattler before I saw it. Snakes are not a leading cause of DNFs.

Mountain Lion
Mountain lions typically hunt alone and are looking for animals smaller than them. Mountain lions are not a leading cause of DNFs.

On the canine side of the house, don't forget about

Coyotes
On the trail marathon I did in December I saw several coyotes on a ridge 200 feet from the trail. Coyotes usually hunt at night, prefer smaller animals (family dog or cat), but can also hunt in packs for larger animals. Coyotes are not a leading cause of DNFs.

And one more comment:

Pepper Spray
You should know that pepper spray is an
-Effective deterrent on mammals, unless they are angry
-Ineffective deterrent on birds and reptiles including snakes

See you at Disney!
PeterPeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02108599265880654491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299086143790529567.post-2149800875787013362010-12-24T07:09:35.648-08:002010-12-24T07:09:35.648-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Peterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02108599265880654491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299086143790529567.post-3110732708493275422010-12-24T07:00:43.937-08:002010-12-24T07:00:43.937-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Peterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02108599265880654491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299086143790529567.post-82750627515159129702010-12-23T17:10:30.416-08:002010-12-23T17:10:30.416-08:00Well, I will carry and share my pepper packet &quo...Well, I will carry and share my pepper packet "pepper spray" with you.

And you and I can carry lots of lip balms. I'm tapped out in the old moola department (that $370 for WS is a killer!). Anyway, I will make do with the trails in Southern California and hope that they suffice. I am glad you enjoy my blog:-)

I partly write my blog so I can look back and remember but I also write my blog for others. I think everyone's race experience is unique but seeing a bunch of different perspectives on the internet creates a prism that one can learn from. Of course mine is from a moderately slow runner (although lately because I really want to ensure I can finish Umstead 100 in under 24 hours and now Western States in the time limit, I have been trying to push myself).

I encourage you to think about an ultra. They are great fun! Looking at your profile it appears you are from VA. There are many great ultra's around here. And a wonderful running group, the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club.
